The Problem
A Sciex 6500 mass spectrometer service was requested after the system experienced multiple operational issues, including HPLC communication drops, roughing pump control problems, Sciex OS startup and processing errors, and unstable ion capillary flow.
System Diagnostics
Diagnostics found several separate causes across the MS, control computer, and connected LC system. The Shimadzu HPLC communication ports were configured, and a failed tungsten lamp in the detector was replaced after testing confirmed an open circuit. A roughing pump communication issue was corrected by repairing a loose cable connection and resetting the pump controller.
Software Recovery
The control PC was also serviced after Sciex OS startup and processing errors were traced to configuration file issues and insufficient free disk space. The application settings were corrected, disk space was cleared, and the OS partition was resized to support stable operation.
Spray Stability and Result
During a later MS front-end service, spray instability and droplets on the curtain plate were traced to a loose ion capillary ferrule. The front end was cleaned, the capillary assembly was properly tightened, and the method temperature was adjusted. After service, the system communicated properly, Sciex OS operated without the reported errors, and the spray was confirmed stable with normal jet shape and no droplet formation.
